reissue of an eye for an eye by byrne & barnes: a true westcoast/aor masterpiece, produced in legendary music city muscle shoals (alabama) and originally only released on japanese label climax. in 1981, robert byrne followed up to his 1979 album, blame it on the night, by teaming-up with multi-instrumentalist brendan barnes to record this rare westcoast classic. if they never recorded any other music together, both display incredible music career and went on to produce for many famous artists such as pointer sisters, patti austin, earth wind & fire, phil collins, brian mcknight, or boyz ii men to name just a few.

shlomo opens the ep with a deep and droning, yet uptempo track. ben gibson continues on the a-side with a synth and tom-driven track, in which the main synth really draws you into the track. takaaki itoh is put on the b1 spot and continues the deep vibe the artists set on the a-side, yet in a more minimalistic way. his track keeps on evolving and growing ever more, while the track in it s core does not change that much. overall severity closes the ep off with a moody banger. this dance floor oriented track focuses on percussive elements and the drums a lot. this track is one of the last ones made by the late max_m, who formed overall severity together with wrong asessment, which makes this ep a little bit more special. four different artists, but a great sounding ep with four tracks that compliment each other really well!

zum 25ten label-jubiläum veröffentlicht fat possum ausgesuchte titel aus dem backkatalog erstmal auf vinyl so auch the george mitchell colelction von houston stackhouse. es ist george mitchell zu verdanken, dass viele klassische blues-aufnahmen entstanden und bis heute archiviert und verbreitet werden. ab 1976 arbeitete mitchell für das bureau of cultural affairs in atlanta, und er begann das land zu bereisen, um folk und blues-musik systematisch mit einem mobilen aufnahmegerät einzufangen und zu dokumentieren. diese arbeit betrieb er über eine dekade, und durch seinen persönlichen einsatz sind klassische blues-alben wie dieses von houston stackhouse und seinen befreundeten musikern entstanden. stackhouse spielte als erstes instrument die mundharmonika, und seit den 30er jahren spielte er in mississippi gemeinsam mit größen wie robert johnson. später verlegte er sich vornehmlich auf slide- und elektrische-gitarre. so spielte er in der folge auch mit muddy waters, little walter, jimmy rogers, roosevelt sykes und earl hooker.

after the release of their album -black ships- earlier this year tokyo black star cybersamurais alex and isao are returning to the mothership innervisions with their new 12 inch. -caballero- is tune from the album with a brand new mixdown by andreas schorpp and Âme plus a little edit-help from dixon. on the b-side radio slave delivers a fantastic remix of -caballero- which transfers the repetitive and hypnotic patterns he is known for with an exotic more cosmic sounding touch. all in all we think that this is definitely the best tokyo black star release we ever had in our hands.

novoline makes music with equipment that was manufactured in 1988 and 1989, controlled via midi by two atari sts. as a sequencer he is using an algorithmic composition program that is 25 years old. with this program he creates sequences that he modulates live by shifting numbers and settings while recording. the process is improvised and contains a good portion of randomly generated melodies and drums, carefully selected and combined by novoline. the result sounds a little like something between a dark 80’s sci-fi soundtrack and an endless marching new beat extended version.

crimes of the future rounds off the year in fine style with an absolutely essential ep from twins. 3 moody us house cuts straught out of atlanta and a sublime deep remix from label boss scott fraser. opening up with cause of dissociation, a slice of banging chicago house that would not have been out of place in the hands of mike dunn at the warehouse. rattling drums amd percussion a cut up vocal and a killer bassline make for dancefloor devastation. next up -you take too- takes things a little deeper, maintining the groove with chicago inspired percussion and filtered drums and stabbing synths grooving the track along. over on side b scott fraser takes -you take too- on to 5am on a dark smoke filled dancefloor, with a deep bassline and soaring strings. adding additional percussion, keys and swirling echoes... could be the sound of a lost nu groove classic. finally things close out with -a way from now- with more chicago inspired goodness with a funky bassline, pumping percussion and eerie ethereal keys rounding the ep off in fine style.

muchias is a collaborative project from normals welcome co-founder nik kozub (the paronomasiac / shout out out out out) and modular synth artist borys (who has toured extensively supporting junior boys, and whose collaborations with junior boys’ jeremy greenspan have seen release on the jiaolong and hyperdub labels). brooding modular techno, acid, and a hint of new beat influence are all represented on this compelling 4 tracker.

this track has been in my computer since a little while when dj sotofett joined me here in amsterdam, to play an epic back to back at the school (amazing new club here). when i am doing a track, it could go to a lot of different directions as im jamming them for hours in my pipe studio. i sometimes could get lost. so i asked sotofett to join me in the studio to help to finish it. then we ended with those 2 versions of cham, which are, as often when i work with the sextags man, the result of live takes almost unedited. we also add some percussions from shadi khries and we recorded two versions of the same track within hours. one being bass driven with a lot of psychedelic noises and the other one more space-techno. our adventures continues, here is another slice of spaced out music.hope you ll enjoy.

australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

janette jnett pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of melbourne, where she’s been djing for well over two decades. here, she delivers her debut solo ep, featuring a quartet of tracks co-produced by maurice fulton. the latter also delivers a solo mix of opener reflection, which adds a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. theres a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of swangzipani. elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills bubbles away is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while judge not wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

frankfurt based producer, dj and music lover martin heimann presents his debut single salto on carry on 008. remaining faithful to its name, the small label puts out another piece of limited wax every once in a long while. enrooted in the soundscapes of 80s proto house the original version of salto is a thriving piece of octave liberation. consistent changes between harmonics break up the repetitive structure, while fm pads and the 303 are performing a little duet. the release is ennobled by two proper remixes from moon b (peoples potential unlimited) and jex opolis (good timin). while moon b keeps it bubblin’ with some extra analogue funk bounce and subtle italo dance floor energy, the b-side is jexi-fied with some embellishment to the cords, change in the bassline and a nice 808 snap. on top mr. opolis adds some mysterious but cheesy vocals samples that match perfect with the moody 80s orchestral stabs.

anyone familiar with the music of sinisa tamamovic knows the man is an expert in techno floor fillers.... the tracks here are no exception, valentina and confused reside in the world of bold, unrelenting grooves constructed with little more than bass and drums: and they get the job done. the bass lines are distinctly sinisa, simple, catchy, and mixed exquisitely, they take on a whole new attitude when played on club systems. valentina starts things strong, its driving rhythm gains energy as atmospheres develop and an worldly vocal enters, a latin american street rhyme that gives the track some international flare. confused is more raw, employing rough drums and ethereal sound effects. either one will do the trick for peak hours and late nights, and expect to hear these all over the place at wmc 2016

the grand opening of the new label serie obscura europa sampled artists , a various artists 12 ep serie to present darkwave bands that escapes a little from the usual electronic sound of the label. on this volume 1 we will find a 90 s ultra classic darkwave hymn of the dissolved german band behind the scenes, uncomprehensively never pressed on vinyl to date. on the other hand, the polish solo act undertheskin shows with 2 cold but extremely rhythmic tracks why his acclaimed debut mini album is one of the most exciting and interesting proposals of 2015. all tracks have been analogically remastered specially for this vinyl version.

fantastic voyage’s autumn 2015 release of soul for dancers proved so successful, that we didn’t have to think twice when lois wilson (mojo, record collector) asked if she could do it all over again. it turns out that there were plenty more classic sides in her dj crates, drawing on that rich seam of early soul and proto-soul rhythm & blues, of the sort that would have packed the dancefloors on the sixties club scene, or has been embraced by subsequent generations of club soul diehards.

bass cadet records is excited to introduce its new series : orbits. originally established in 2012, the label also stands a little vinyl corner on weserstrasse since june 2013, right in the middle of the always bubbling neighborhood of berlin-neukölln. curated from the recordstore, the series is dedicated to the artists who support it and make its life. leaning on strong ties of respect and friendship, orbits will consist of a slew of releases featuring some of the most inspiring and influential artists of the electronic music scene. orbits will start with a re-issue of two ron trent timeless jams out of his “dance classic” album, released on prescription on cd only in 2009.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

romina johnson is a vocalist that needs little introduction, known worldwide for her chart-smashing moving too fast single back in 2000, and now more notably for being part of the hugely successful disco group odyssey, her amazing songwriting & performing talents have taken her right to the dizzy heights of musics elite.

with releases on rush hour, mister saturday night and delusions of grandeur, nebraska is a man who needs little introduction. here, he delivers and amazing ep for heist, showcasing his talent for finding those catchy, but hard to pin-down samples. the soften the wireless ep navigates nicely between disco and house with 4 originals and an amazing tom noble remix. khans bargain will be the go to track the more disco minded listeners out there, with a catchy-as-hell synth line that you wish youd made up yourself. the remix, courtesy of nycs finest disco selector tom noble, goes on a clubbier path, turning the silky smooth original into a distorted house jam full of delays and filtered drums. the b-side sees nebraska turning towards the housier side of things himself, with the blues as a perfect example of minimalistic house. here, he uses only a small amount of elements to create an intoxicating and intense groove. it wont be long breezes through with a lighthearted arpeggio and some lovely dreamy vocals to set a more emotional vibe. ep closing track (digi only) varkala is somewhat of a special track, being dug up from an old hard disc and remastered for your listening pleasure. sincerely yours, lars & maarten
